Proper storage isn't just good practice — it's what makes reproducible research possible.
Storing Lyophilized (Unreconstituted) Peptides
Most research peptides ship in a lyophilized powder form. In this state, they're relatively stable, but a few conditions still apply:
- Temperature: Store lyophilized peptides in a freezer at -20°C for long-term storage. Short-term storage (a few weeks) can occur at refrigerator temperatures (2–8°C), though freezing extends shelf life significantly.
- Light exposure: Keep vials in their original packaging or a dark container, since UV and even ambient light can break down certain peptide bonds over time.
- Moisture: Lyophilized peptides are hygroscopic, meaning they readily absorb moisture from the air. Always keep vials sealed until they're ready for use, and consider desiccant packets for long-term storage.
Reconstitution Best Practices
Reconstitution — dissolving the lyophilized powder into a liquid solution — is the step where most stability issues occur if not done carefully:
- Bring vials to room temperature before opening to avoid condensation forming inside the vial.
- Use bacteriostatic water or an appropriate solvent as specified by the peptide's documentation — never use tap water.
- Add solvent slowly, directing the stream along the inside wall of the vial rather than directly onto the powder, to avoid excess foaming or agitation that can denature the peptide.
- Avoid vigorous shaking. Gently swirl or roll the vial between your palms until the powder fully dissolves.
Storing Reconstituted Peptides
Once reconstituted, a peptide becomes significantly more sensitive to degradation:
- Store reconstituted solutions in a refrigerator (2–8°C), not a freezer, since repeated freeze-thaw cycles break down peptide structure faster than refrigeration alone.
- Use reconstituted peptides within the timeframe specified in the compound's documentation — typically anywhere from a few days to a few weeks depending on the peptide.
- Label every vial with the reconstitution date so lab personnel can track shelf life accurately.
Handling and Documentation
Beyond temperature and light, a few handling practices help preserve research integrity:
- Use sterile technique when drawing from vials to prevent microbial contamination, which can compromise both the peptide and the validity of research results.
- Log every batch with its Certificate of Analysis (COA), reconstitution date, and storage conditions, so your lab maintains a clear chain of documentation for reproducibility.
- Avoid cross-contamination between different peptide vials by using fresh needles/syringes for each draw.
Why Third-Party Testing Matters
A peptide's stated purity is only meaningful if it's been verified. Third-party laboratory testing — independent of the manufacturer — confirms that a compound matches its labeled specification before it ever reaches a researcher's bench.
